HiveWings

One mind, one will, one queen.

The HiveWings are one of the three Pantalan tribes introduced in the second arc of the *Wings of Fire* series. They are a highly organized, insect-like dragon tribe that rules over the Hives—vast, living structures built from a mysterious substance called 'the HiveMind.' HiveWings are known for their connection to the HiveMind, which grants them a shared consciousness and the ability to communicate telepathically within their territory. Their society is rigidly structured around the HiveMind's will, with a queen who serves as its voice, and they play a central role in the conflict of the 'Pantala' arc, particularly in the struggle against the tyrannical Queen Wasp.

Lore & Background

HiveWings are distinguished by their wasp-like features, including striped bodies, multiple eyes, and wings that can fold flat against their backs. They live in massive, hexagonal Hives that are both cities and fortresses, each ruled by a HiveWing queen or a subordinate. The HiveMind is a psychic network that links all HiveWings, allowing them to share thoughts and memories, but it is also a tool of control, as Queen Wasp can use it to dominate or even erase the minds of her subjects. This collective consciousness makes HiveWings highly efficient but also suppresses individuality, leading to a culture of obedience and fear.

In Their Own Story

In the shadow of a buzzing Hive, a young HiveWing named Cricket pressed her claws against the cool, organic wall. She could feel the HiveMind pulsing around her, a constant hum of thoughts not her own. But today, she listened for something else—a whisper of rebellion, a crack in the perfect order. Her antennae twitched as she caught a stray thought: 'The flamesilk is free.' Cricket's heart raced. She knew the HiveMind would punish her for even hearing it, but she couldn't stop the thrill of hope. For the first time, she dared to imagine a HiveWing world without Queen Wasp's voice in her head.

Reader's Guide

HiveWing culture is built on efficiency and hierarchy, with each dragon assigned a role from hatching. Their territory is the Hives of Pantala, a continent separate from Pyrrhia, where they live in constant vigilance against the other tribes, especially the LeafWings. Leadership is absolute under Queen Wasp, who controls the HiveMind and enforces her will through fear and manipulation. Unique customs include the 'Metamorphosis' ceremony, where young HiveWings undergo a physical change to gain their adult abilities, and the 'HiveMind' gatherings where all dragons share memories. HiveWings view other tribes as inferior or threats, leading to a history of conflict, particularly the war with the LeafWings over the 'Tree Wars.' However, by the end of the arc, cracks in their unity appear as rebels like Cricket and Sundew challenge Wasp's rule, showing that even the most controlled society can change.
