Clay
The gentle giant who'd rather share a cow than throw a punch.
Clay is a male MudWing dragonet and one of the five protagonists of the original Wings of Fire series. He is the 'wings of fire' in the prophecy that foretold the end of the War of SandWing Succession—but don't let the heroic title fool you. Clay would rather share a cow with a friend than fight a war. As the heart of the Dragonets of Destiny, he brings the tribes together not with brute force, but with stubborn kindness and a warmth that melts even the iciest scales.

Lore & Background
Clay was born in the MudWing hatchery under the mountain, one of the dragonets raised in secret to fulfill the prophecy that would end the SandWing war. Unlike most MudWings, who bond fiercely with their blood siblings in sibships, Clay was ripped from his clutchmates and raised alongside dragons from other tribes. The isolation could have made him bitter, but instead it forged something rare: a MudWing who listens before he bites. His natural warmth and protective instincts made him the group's emotional anchor—the one who'd take a hit for Tsunami, comfort Glory after a nightmare, or sneak Sunny an extra piece of meat. He is notably less aggressive than typical MudWings, preferring to solve problems with kindness rather than force, though he'll throw a mean tail-whack if his friends are in danger.
As the 'wings of fire' in the prophecy, Clay's destiny was tied to the hope of a new era. He developed a close bond with his fellow dragonets, especially Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny, and later formed a deep friendship with Peril, the SkyWing with firescales. Their bond is built on trust and a shared loneliness—Peril can't touch anyone without burning them, but Clay's heat-resistant scales let him be the first dragon to hug her without flinching. His journey from a captive dragonet to a hero of Pyrrhia is marked by his unwavering loyalty and his ability to see the good in others, even enemies. Clay's role extends beyond the war; he becomes a mentor at Jade Mountain Academy, where he teaches young dragons that peace isn't weakness—it's the hardest kind of strength.
In Their Own Story
The cave was cold, but Clay's heart was warm as he nudged the sleeping dragonets around him. Tsunami's tail twitched in her dreams—probably fighting a shark again—and Glory's scales shimmered faintly in the torchlight, like embers waiting to catch fire. He remembered the day they'd hatched, the prophecy echoing in the shadows, and how he'd felt a strange pull to protect them all. Now, as the war raged above, he knew their time was coming. He'd seen the maps, heard the whispers of battles, and felt the weight of the world on his wings. But for now, in this quiet moment, he was just a dragonet with a dream of a peaceful sky—and a stomach growling for breakfast.
Reader's Guide
Clay is a MudWing dragonet of immense size and strength, but his defining trait is his gentle and protective nature. He is the heart of the Dragonets of Destiny, often acting as the group's mediator and emotional support—the one who smooths over Tsunami's temper and calms Glory's sharp tongue. His key relationships include his deep friendship with Peril, whom he helps overcome her deadly firescales (and who he can actually touch without getting third-degree burns), and his loyalty to his fellow dragonets, especially Tsunami and Sunny. Notable moments include his first encounter with the SkyWing arena, where he refuses to fight—a quiet rebellion that speaks louder than any battle cry—and his crucial role in the peace negotiations after the war, where his simple honesty cuts through political lies. Personality-wise, Clay is kind, selfless, and sometimes naive (he once tried to befriend a venomous scavenger), but his courage and empathy make him a natural leader. He is a symbol of hope and the belief that even in a world of war, compassion can prevail—and that sometimes the strongest thing you can do is offer a dragon a second chance.
Did You Know?
- Clay is the only MudWing in the original Dragonets of Destiny, representing his tribe's strength and loyalty—but he's also the only one who'd rather share his food than fight over it.
- He has a unique ability to withstand high temperatures, which lets him befriend Peril, a SkyWing with deadly firescales. He's the first dragon she can hug without hurting—and she doesn't let go.
- Clay's favorite food is cow, and he often daydreams about eating them—whole herds of them, slow-roasted over a campfire. It's a simple dream, but it says everything about his down-to-earth soul.
- He was the first of the dragonets to hatch, making him the oldest in the group, though he rarely acts like it—unless you count the fact that he's always the one cleaning up their messes.
