Lore & Background
Peril is a SkyWing, one of the seven tribes inhabiting the continent of Pyrrhia. Her defining trait is her firescales, a rare genetic condition that causes her scales to burn anything she touches—grass withers beneath her claws, prey cooks before she can bite, and any dragon she hugs risks being scarred or killed. This makes her both powerful and profoundly isolated, as she cannot safely interact with others without harming them. In the second arc, Peril is a student at Jade Mountain Academy, the intertribal school established by the Dragonets of Destiny six months after the events of *The Brightest Night*. The academy brings dragonets of all tribes together, and Peril is one of the five protagonists of the arc, alongside Moonwatcher (NightWing), Winter (IceWing), Turtle (SeaWing), and Qibli (SandWing). Peril's role in the story involves facing off against threats both old and new, including the ancient animus dragon Darkstalker. Notably, Peril destroys a scroll holding all of Darkstalker's power, releasing it back to him and freeing him from imprisonment—a decision that unleashes chaos across Pyrrhia. Later, she is involved in the plot to stop Darkstalker, which culminates when a RainWing named Kinkajou enchants a strawberry that Darkstalker is tricked into eating, turning him into a dragonet with no memories of his former identity.
In Their Own Story
Peril's story begins in *Escaping Peril*, the third book of the Jade Mountain Prophecy arc. She is a SkyWing with firescales, a condition that makes her scales burn anything she touches—a curse that has kept her lonely and feared. As a student at Jade Mountain Academy, she navigates the challenges of her dangerous ability while forming tentative bonds with other dragonets, especially the NightWing Moonwatcher and the SeaWing Turtle. Her firescales play a critical role in the arc's climax: Peril destroys a scroll that holds all of Darkstalker's power, releasing it back to him and freeing the ancient animus from his imprisonment. After Darkstalker escapes, he performs many enchantments, including bending a tribe to his will and sending a magical plague to his enemies. Peril, along with the other protagonists, works to stop him—using her unique ability to burn through enchantments and her fierce loyalty to protect her friends. The conflict ends when a RainWing named Kinkajou uses a portion of the previously mentioned scroll to enchant a strawberry, which Darkstalker is tricked into eating. The strawberry turns him into a dragonet with no memories of his former identity, effectively killing him and ending his reign.
