In Their Own Story

The Rainforest was quiet at the hour the sun slipped behind the canopy, and the mist thickened until the world beyond ten paces dissolved into grey. It peeled away from her silhouette and stood upright—a second Moon, flickering at the edges, its eyes two pinpricks of pale light. The clone tilted its head, mimicking her, then turned and walked into the fog without a sound. Moon watched it go, felt the faint tug of connection snap, and let the remaining darkness sink back into the earth. Shadow manipulation is an innate, inborn ability exclusive to the NightWing tribe. Every NightWing possesses it to some degree; it is not granted by a spell, a dragonet's special power, or any external magic. The ability works by drawing ambient darkness from the environment and reshaping it into physical constructs. The most visible expression is the shadow clone: a semi-solid, dark humanoid copy of the user that can walk, talk, carry items, and fight. Clones are not invulnerable—they can be dispelled by force or light—but they are surprisingly durable and can act independently for a period. NightWings can also shape shadows into weapons, barriers, or tools on the fly. A subtler and more invasive use is the shadow tendril, a thin extension sent into another dragon's mind to read their current thoughts or retrieve specific memories. This is a one-way observation; the target typically does not realize the intrusion. In the books, this aspect is treated as a serious ethical concern and a source of tension between NightWings and other tribes. Limitations include the need for available ambient darkness (bright, open sunlight makes the power harder to sustain), the physical and mental strain of maintaining large or numerous constructs, and the fact that skill varies enormously between individuals. A young NightWing might manage a small shadow ball, while a seasoned warrior like Thunder or Glory can field multiple clones simultaneously. No non-NightWing character in the main series is shown acquiring this ability through magic or training; it remains firmly a tribal birthright.
